Niacinamide appears in everything from gentle moisturisers to concentrated Korean serums. It is a form of vitamin B3 used to support the skin barrier, balance the look of excess oil and improve the appearance of uneven tone.
The confusing part is concentration. A higher percentage is not automatically better, particularly for sensitive or inexperienced skin. Choosing the right strength and keeping the rest of the routine simple usually matters more.
What can niacinamide help with?
In a well-formulated product, niacinamide can support several common skincare goals:
- A stronger, more comfortable-feeling skin barrier
- The appearance of uneven tone and post-blemish marks
- The look of enlarged pores and excess shine
- General hydration and smoother-looking texture
It is not a bleaching ingredient and it does not erase marks overnight. Consistent use, daily sunscreen and a routine that does not repeatedly irritate the skin are essential.
Which percentage should you choose?
Lower to moderate strengths
Products around 2–5% can be a sensible starting point for many people. They are often easier to use daily and can already provide useful barrier and tone-supporting benefits.
AXIS-Y Dark Spot Correcting Glow Serum is a balanced option for shoppers focused on uneven tone and hydration.
Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide combines niacinamide with a soothing, glow-focused serum base.
Higher strengths
Ten to fifteen per cent formulas are more concentrated and may appeal to experienced users concerned about oiliness or stubborn-looking post-blemish marks. They can also feel too intense for some skin types.
Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum targets uneven-looking tone with a concentrated combination.
COSRX Advanced Niacinamide 15% Serum is the strongest option in this selection and is better approached gradually rather than added to both morning and evening routines immediately.

A simple niacinamide routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser or a water rinse
- Hydrating toner, if wanted
- Niacinamide serum
- Moisturiser
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen
Evening
- Remove sunscreen and make-up
- Cleanse
- Apply niacinamide or another targeted treatment
- Finish with moisturiser
You do not need several niacinamide products in the same routine. Check ingredient lists: your toner, serum and moisturiser may all contain it, even when it is not highlighted on the front label.
Can niacinamide be combined with other ingredients?
Niacinamide is commonly paired with hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, ceramides and soothing ingredients. It can also appear in routines containing vitamin C or exfoliating acids, but introducing everything at once makes irritation difficult to diagnose.
If you already use a strong acid, retinoid or benzoyl peroxide treatment, add niacinamide on alternate days at first. Sensitive skin may prefer a moderate-strength formula and a fragrance-conscious routine.
What about niacinamide and tranexamic acid?
Tranexamic acid is increasingly paired with niacinamide in formulas intended for uneven-looking tone. The combination can be useful for shoppers focused on post-blemish marks, but daily sunscreen remains vital because continued UV exposure can make visible pigmentation harder to improve.
How often should niacinamide be used?
Begin three or four times per week and increase according to comfort. Lower-strength formulas may suit daily use, while concentrated serums may only be needed once per day or less often.
Reduce frequency if you notice persistent stinging, redness or roughness. More product and more frequent application do not guarantee faster results.
Choosing the right formula
- New or sensitive skin: begin with a moderate strength and a short ingredient list.
- Dry skin: choose a serum with additional hydrating or soothing ingredients.
- Oily skin: look for a lightweight texture and introduce concentrated formulas slowly.
- Uneven tone: use consistently and pair with daily sun protection.
A niacinamide mask, such as the BIODANCE Radiant Vita Niacinamide Real Deep Mask, can be an occasional hydrating step, but it does not need to replace a consistent daily routine.
