Centella asiatica has become one of the most recognisable ingredients in Korean skincare. You may also see it described as cica, tiger grass, centella extract or centella leaf water.

Its popularity comes from the way it fits into gentle, hydration-focused routines. Centella products are commonly chosen when skin feels dry, stressed or uncomfortable, but the complete formula still matters more than one headline ingredient.

What is Centella asiatica?

Centella asiatica is a botanical plant used in many skincare formats, including toners, serums, ampoules, moisturisers and sunscreens. Korean formulas may use the whole extract or related components such as madecassoside, asiaticoside and madecassic acid.

Centella is not an exfoliating acid and does not need to make skin tingle to be effective. Most cica products are designed to support hydration and a comfortable-feeling routine.

What can Centella skincare help with?

  • Supporting skin that feels dry, tight or easily stressed
  • Adding hydration without necessarily using a heavy texture
  • Complementing barrier-focused ingredients such as ceramides and panthenol
  • Creating a gentler routine around stronger active ingredients

Centella skincare does not replace medical treatment for persistent inflammation, acne or dermatitis. Think of it as a supportive cosmetic ingredient rather than a cure.

Is Centella the same as cica?

In skincare, “cica” is usually shorthand for Centella asiatica or a formula inspired by it. A product labelled cica may contain centella extract, centella leaf water, madecassoside or several related ingredients.

Always check the ingredient list. The word cica on the front of a product does not tell you the concentration, texture or suitability of the complete formula.

Who may enjoy Centella skincare?

Centella products are often chosen for sensitive, dry, combination or blemish-prone routines. Oily skin may prefer a toner or ampoule, while dry skin may enjoy a cream that combines cica with richer barrier-supporting ingredients.

Patch test first if your skin is highly reactive. Fragrance, essential oils and stronger actives elsewhere in the formula may influence how a product feels.

How to use Centella in a routine

Morning

  1. Cleanse gently or rinse with water.
  2. Apply a Centella toner, serum or ampoule.
  3. Follow with moisturiser if needed.
  4. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Evening

  1. Remove sunscreen and make-up.
  2. Cleanse without leaving skin tight.
  3. Apply the Centella step from thinnest to thickest texture.
  4. Finish with moisturiser.

You do not need a toner, serum and cream all featuring Centella. One well-chosen product is usually enough to introduce the ingredient.

Toner, serum or moisturiser?

  • Choose a toner for a light first layer after cleansing.
  • Choose a serum or ampoule when you want a more concentrated treatment texture.
  • Choose a moisturiser when comfort and barrier support are the final routine goal.

Can Centella be used with niacinamide, retinoids or acids?

Centella is commonly used alongside niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ceramides. It can also appear in routines containing exfoliating acids or retinoids, but it does not prevent irritation caused by overuse.

Introduce strong active ingredients separately, reduce frequency if discomfort develops and keep the rest of the routine straightforward.

How often can Centella be used?

Many Centella products are designed for daily use, but frequency depends on the full formula. Begin once daily or several times per week if your skin is very reactive, then increase according to comfort.

Choosing a Centella product

  • Sensitive-feeling skin: look for a simple formula and patch test first.
  • Oily or combination skin: consider a toner, serum or lightweight lotion.
  • Dry skin: choose a cream that combines Centella with richer moisturising ingredients.
  • Blemish-prone routines: avoid adding several new active products simultaneously.
